On the evening of December 14th, we are privileged to host Tim Nelson, MD, PhD, the visionary founder and CEO of HeartWorks, who will share groundbreaking research and medical advancements dedicated to revolutionizing the destinies of individuals born with congenital heart defects (CHD).
CHD is a condition that affects 1 in 100 children, making it one of the most prevalent birth defects worldwide. Current funding for research and development is limited, leaving those born with severe CHD with limited treatment options. In fact, the current state of healthcare only offers palliative options for these individuals. Shockingly, 1 in 4 of those born with a CHD will require a life-saving surgical procedure within their first year of life. Even with these interventions, 50% of children born with CHD won’t make it to their fifth birthday.
This event is about hope, with a mission to change these statistics and offer a brighter future for those affected by CHD. Heartworks are on the cusp of monumental breakthroughs that will revolutionize the treatment and outcomes for individuals with CHD. They have launched the world’s first FDA approved autologous stem cell clinical trial for cardiac use. This means they are able to bioengineer skin cells into beating cardiac tissue and later use those cardiac cells to strengthen the heart.
