dedicated since 2010

Founded by Todd and Karen Wanek, HeartWorks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to curing congenital heart defects.

Why We Exist

In 2010, Todd Wanek, CEO of Ashley Furniture, and his wife, Karen Wanek, pioneered a platform for curing congenital heart disease. Motivated by their daughter Gabrielle’s journey, they launched the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) at Mayo Clinic, a groundbreaking initiative to advance stem cell research for individuals born with CHD.

Thanks to the program’s remarkable work and the Wanek family’s continued support, HeartWorks was created in 2020 to bring that research out of the lab and develop treatments and products for today’s generation.

HeartWorks is a nonprofit medical research organization dedicated to developing and delivering breakthrough therapies and technologies to cure congenital heart disease.

HeartWorks exists to change what’s possible and how fast it happens.

OUR PURPOSE

To spark bold innovation that transforms our broken healthcare system into one that truly heals.

OUR mission

HeartWorks develops and delivers breakthrough therapies for congenital heart disease.

OUR vision

A future where people with CHD thrive with a focus on longevity, not just temporary solutions.

OUR focus

  • Improving blood flow to the lungs for better heart function
  • Strengthening the heart muscle to make it more resilient
  • Expanding heart transplant options by restoring donor hearts
  • Empowering patients with a database that puts them in control of their CHD journey

It Takes a Dream Team To Dream Up A Cure

We are a dedicated team singularly focused on congenital heart disease (CHD). Every day (since 2010!) we work to strengthen hearts, expand treatment options, and improve outcomes for the 1 in 100 families affected by CHD.

Our team brings together diverse expertise from scientific discovery and clinical innovation to patient engagement and community leadership. Through this collaborative team of teams approach, HeartWorks unites heart families, clinicians, researchers, donors, and partners around one shared commitment: advancing solutions for congenital heart disease.

Together, we are building a new model for CHD care by developing breakthrough therapies, preparing care teams, and ensuring innovation reaches the families who need it most.

What We Do

  • Develop patient-specific cell therapies
  • Advance clinical trials for CHD
  • Build platforms like The Co-op to accelerate research
  • Deliver solutions that go beyond managing CHD—toward curing it

Why We Do It

  • Congenital heart disease affects 1 in 100 births, making it the most common birth defect yet it remains underfunded and underserved.
  • Millions are living with lifelong complications, often facing repeated surgeries and uncertain futures.
  • Progress has been too slow for too long. Families cannot wait decades for new solutions.
  • No single breakthrough will solve CHD. It requires building and delivering therapies, technologies, and data systems that work together.
