Stories From The hEart

"Her smile can light up a room and her laughter is contagious."

Bella Borkowski was diagnosed in utero on November 2, 2012, with a severe single ventricle heart defect, called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. While we were overcome with fear and worry, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia gave us the HOPE we needed for Bella’s life. Bella entered the world full of fight on March 18, 2013. While those moments were a whirlwind, we were able to steal a few moments with her before she was taken to the cardiac intensive care unit. And much to our family’s surprise they were able to peak at her as the nurses wheeled her down the hall. Bella went on to have 3 open heart surgeries by the time she was 3 years old to “repair” her heart defect.

Today, at the age of 10, Bella lives a full life. She loves her family and her friends. Her smile can light up a room and her laughter is contagious. She has a passion for cheerleading and tumbling. She has learned that she can accomplish anything she puts her mind to. Yes, there are questions about her future, but for now she LIVES. All we want for her is to keep her future as bright as she is.

You may have heard Bella’s story before. Bella’s family has been advocating for CHD for over ten years through their non-profit, Beats for Bella.
