Meet Ben!
Every congenital heart disease (CHD) story begins differently, but many share a common thread of uncertainty, courage, and the determination to fight for a brighter future. For the Gaston family, their journey began like many others: at a routine 20-week ultrasound. This is when they learned their son, Ben, would be born with a single ventricle heart. The news was overwhelming, but their love and resilience set the stage for a story filled with strength, hope, and joy.
Today, Ben is 3½ years old, a vibrant, adventurous, real-life superhero with three heart surgeries behind him. His contagious energy and silly personality have reshaped how his family approaches each day. He’s thriving in preschool, learning to swim, kicking soccer balls across the field, and discovering new adventures after the family’s recent move to Charleston, South Carolina. Living near the beach has opened a new world of joy for Ben, who dreams of catching his first shark one day!
The Gastons and HeartWorks
“Our family is passionate about the work happening at HeartWorks,” the Gastons share. “This work has given us real and tangible hope for Ben’s future, and for all children with single-ventricle hearts.”
The Gaston family has been an enthusiastic part of the HeartWorks community, attending the Virtual Dinner for two years and “geeking out” during lab tours and research updates. For them, sharing their story isn’t just about awareness, it’s about inspiring other CHD families to stay hopeful and connected. Each milestone Ben reaches is a powerful reminder of how far medical innovation and family support have come.
Embracing New Adventures
Their move to Charleston marks a new chapter filled with sunshine, laughter, and gratitude. The Gastons are eager to connect with local heart families, share experiences, and uplift others navigating the CHD journey. “Each day,” they say, “we’re reminded that love, support, and innovation pave the way for a healthier future.”
With the help of organizations like HeartWorks + the dedication of families like the Gastons, the future for children with congenital heart disease continues to grow brighter.
